Wakefield is governed by an open town meeting, with a 7-member Board of Selectmen.

If you're new in town, you are urged to register to vote at the office of the Acting Town Clerk (Mary Kay Galvin; 246-6383). You can also register your business in town at the Town Clerk's office.

Questions about the town's facilities and grounds, rubbish collection, recycling and water service should be forwarded to the Department of Public Works, under the direction of Richard Stinson (246-6300). (For information about recycling, click here.)

The Library offers 77,000 hardcover books and 5,000 paperbacks. Also available: audio & instructional cassettes, books on cassette, large print books, phonograph records, magazines and newspapers, copy machine, income tax forms and information maps, notaries public, pattern exchange, telephone books, coupon exchange, career room, college information and catalogs. The Youth Room offers story hours, vacation activites, films and craft activities.

• Friday, 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM
• Saturday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM

  Closed Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays during the Summer.

The Wakefield Police Department and the Wakefield Fire Department are temporarily housed at the Montrose School pending the opening of the new Public Safety Building on Crescent Street.

Wakefield Public Schools are under the direction of Dr. Maynard Suffredini, Superintendent. School Administration is located at 60 Farm Street, Wakefield (246-6400).
